You’re the LOOK BUT DON’T TOUCH type, JUST LIKE A PLUMOSE ANEMONE!

When you dive, your eyes grow wide with wonder. You take in everything around you, paying close attention to every little creature living its life underwater. Whether it’s seaweed or a seal, you’re fascinated by it all and can’t wait to identify the species you saw once you’re back on land. Who knows? You might even discover a new species!
The plumose anemone (Metridium senile) anchors itself to rocks (or other surfaces) and spends its life sensing particles that drift into its tentacles. It doesn’t hunt — it waits patiently for food to come to it. Patience is a virtue, and the anemone lives by it every day.

You’re the KEEP IT CLEAN type… LIKE A CHANNEL CATFISH!
You’re a diver with a strong environmental conscience. You use your dives as opportunities to collect trash and never leave a piece behind. You take part in shoreline cleanups and strictly follow “Leave No Trace” principles. To you, aquatic ecosystems are treasures that must be protected at all costs.
The channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) is the most common catfish in North America. It can grow up to 1 metre long and weigh 15 kg. This scaleless bottom-dweller uses its long whiskers (barbels) to search for food among rocks and debris, effectively helping to “clean” its habitat. With taste buds all over its body, it can taste the water and easily locate food.

You’re the OOH SHINY! type, JUST LIKE A CTENOPHORE!

You find beauty everywhere — especially underwater. You never dive without your camera and can stay perfectly still just to get the perfect shot of a bubble-blowing fish. You feel like an explorer — even an astronaut — discovering another world, and you want to share that beauty with the rest of the planet. With all your gear and lighting, the fish who want to be stars know how to find you!
Ctenophores are mesmerizing animals. Translucent and various in shape, the comb-like rows they use to move refract light and make them shimmer like underwater jewels. Some species are even bioluminescent and glow in an array of colours.

You’re the ONE WITH MY GEAR type, JUST LIKE A LOBSTER!

You’re a diver who’s always on the lookout for the latest technology to improve your gear collection. You take great care of it and even have a dedicated gear room at home. Your wetsuit and drysuit are tailored just for you, and you own multiple versions of each piece of equipment — with some definite favourites.
With its massive claws, the American lobster (Homarus americanus) is the king of crustaceans. It’s the only lobster species found along the Atlantic coast, with its largest population in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence. Sometimes weighing over 19 kg, it’s the heaviest arthropod (with 10 legs). Though usually found in waters less than 50 metres deep, lobsters can live at depths up to 500 metres — and up to 50 years.

You’re the NOT EVEN COLD type, JUST LIKE AN ATLANTIC WOLFFISH!

Diving in icy water comes naturally to you. The bite of cold doesn’t scare you — you’ll jump into the water whether it’s liquid or solid. With the right gear and confidence in your setup, you’re ready to explore winter’s crystal-clear waters.
The Atlantic wolffish (Anarhichas lupus) lives in cold water year-round and produces natural antifreeze proteins to survive near-freezing temperatures. Since it doesn’t have a swim bladder, it sinks to the bottom when it stops swimming, making it a true bottom-dweller. A powerful carnivore, it earns its “wolf” name with its strong jaw and prominent canine teeth.

You’re the ZEN AS A JELLYFISH type!

You’ve got great buoyancy and a peaceful diving style. You enjoy drifting calmly through the water, avoiding sudden movements. You prefer small groups or diving with just a buddy, seeking out quiet spots away from the crowds. The weightlessness and steady rhythm of your breathing soothe you as you dive.
Jellyfish are hypnotically beautiful and mysterious. They float solo with slow, graceful movements, drifting along with the currents. Found in all marine ecosystems, they adapt easily to change. Canada is home to around 110 jellyfish species, most of which are harmless. In Québec, the freshwater species Craspedacusta sowerbyi is an invasive one from Asia. Measuring only 2 cm with microscopic eggs, it’s vital to rinse your gear thoroughly after every dive to help prevent its spread.

You’re the HIGHLY SCIENTIFIC type, JUST LIKE A SHARP-RIDGED ELKTOE MUSSEL!

You’re a diver who’s curious about everything you see. Whether reading cliff walls to trace geological movements, exploring wrecks to relive history, or observing underwater chemical phenomena — you want to understand it all. You often dive with a notebook and camera to document your findings.
Québec has 21 species of freshwater mussels (malacological dulcicoles), some of which live for decades — even centuries. Though they can move using a foot, they usually remain stationary. Attached to a surface or buried in soft sediment, they filter up to a litre of water per hour. Their health reflects that of the ecosystem around them. Mussels sort particles, keeping the nutrients they need and releasing filtered water and unwanted material in a mucus-like form that feeds other species. Mussels are among Québec’s most endangered animal groups due to habitat loss, pollution, and invasive species like the zebra mussel. That’s why cleaning your gear thoroughly after every dive is so important.

You’re the JUST HAPPY TO BE UNDERWATER type, LIKE A BULLFROG!

You don’t need mysterious shipwrecks or colourful fish to enjoy being underwater. For you, diving is simply about being in your favourite element: water. No matter what a dive site offers, as long as there’s water, you’re in! You move through it like you were born with fins.
Bullfrogs (Lithobates catesbeianus) are amphibians — animals that mark the transition from aquatic to land life — but they spend most of their time in the water. They’re the largest frog in North America and thrive in any wet environment. Bullfrogs can grow up to 20 cm, with legs reaching 25 cm. In warm seasons, they’re active day and night. Males form choruses to attract females, but come winter, they bury themselves in mud to hibernate until spring.

You’re the LET’S DIVE AS A GROUP type, JUST LIKE SEALS!

You’re a social diver who loves diving with friends or as part of a dive group. You enjoy sharing the experience and find comfort in diving with others. You watch out for your fellow divers and gladly offer tips to those with less experience. You have just as much fun joking and bonding on land as you do in the water.
Harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) are highly social creatures. They love to play in the water and are naturally curious. On land, they haul out on rocks together to dry off and swap stories. Males can live up to 25 years, females up to 35, and they can weigh up to 170 kg while eating 2–3 kg of fish per day. Found all along Québec’s coastline, their daily routine follows the tides. Make sure to check with local experts before diving in seal zones, as haul-out areas are protected and off-limits. Marine mammal protection laws limit human–seal interactions — though curious seals will likely find you underwater and join you for a flip or two!

You’re the PUSH THE LIMITS type, JUST LIKE A GREENLAND SHARK!

For you, diving is a true extreme sport. Like the Greenland shark, you go all in. You take on challenges head-on and are always looking for ways to dive deeper, longer, and farther. Even when the waters are rough, you never back down.
The Greenland shark (Somniosus microcephalus) thrives in the extreme. It’s the only shark species that lives in the polar waters of the North Atlantic, usually found at depths between 200 and 500 metres — but capable of going as deep as 2,600 metres. On top of withstanding the cold and immense pressure, it also holds the record for longevity, with some studies estimating a lifespan of 300 to 400 years.
