Although still relatively unknown to the general public, underwater hockey<\/strong> is played in several clubs across Quebec. The sport is also practiced elsewhere in Canada and in more than 30 countries worldwide<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Invented in England in 1954 by Alan Blake<\/strong>, underwater hockey was created by scuba diving enthusiasts looking to stay in shape during the winter. Long before the first official rules appeared in the mid-1960s, friendly matches were already being held between clubs. At first, the game was very basic \u2014 players simply pushed a brass puck with a small wooden stick. It wasn\u2019t until about twenty years later that the equipment became more refined and specialized. In Quebec, underwater hockey was introduced around thirty years ago by Rodrigue Sarrazin<\/strong>, following a scuba diving trip to the United States.<\/p>\n

Players move horizontally, parallel to the bottom of the pool, at a depth ranging from 2 to 3 metres. They wear fins, a mask<\/strong>, a snorkel<\/strong>, a glove<\/strong>, and a 30-centimetre stick<\/strong>. The gear is quite different from ice hockey! The puck<\/strong>, which stays on the pool floor, weighs 1.5 kg.<\/p>\n

The game is played six versus six<\/strong>, and the goal is to push the puck into the opposing team\u2019s net, which is 3 metres wide. Players pass the puck and use the time when it’s in another player\u2019s possession to come up for air. A regulation game lasts 33 minutes<\/strong>, divided into two 15-minute halves with a 3-minute halftime, during which teams switch sides.<\/p>\n

Underwater hockey<\/strong> is accessible to everyone and can be played from childhood well into later years. It helps develop strong cardiovascular fitness<\/strong>. Contrary to what you might think, you don\u2019t need to stay underwater for long periods to be a good underwater hockey player!<\/p>\n
